How To Get Rid Of Diarrhea The Natural Way (Based On Research)
Unfortunately, everyone will suffer from diarrhea at some point in their life. Diarrhea can be acute or chronic (constant diarrhea) and can make us feel weak, drained, and sometimes even embarrassed. Knowing more about the disease and how to get rid of diarrhea can help reduce its impact on your life.
In this article, I'm going to look at home remedies to help relieve symptoms of diarrhea. These home remedies are backed by research and can help you manage and even prevent diarrhea. To know how to get rid of diarrhea naturally, you need to know what causes acute and chronic diarrhea.
The causes of diarrhea
When you have diarrhea, your stools are very loose and watery, and you may experience stomach pain and nausea. You may also notice gurgling noises from your stomach area and you may need to use the bathroom more often during the day.
Acute diarrhea occurs suddenly but disappears after a few days. Dr. David T. Derrer suggests that if your diarrhea lasts longer than 4 weeks, chronic diarrhea (persistent diarrhea) can be a possible sign of more serious health. If you have chronic diarrhea you should always see your doctor as it will require more professional management to relieve symptoms.
Diarrhea is caused because your digestive system is not working properly. Some of the reasons for an upset stomach are:
- Viral or bacterial infections
- Food poisoning
- Taking antibiotics
- Anxiety and / or stress
Diarrhea caused by one or more of these symptoms usually lasts only a few days. However, sometimes diarrhea can last for many weeks and be a sign of a more serious indigestion.
Dr. Thomas Lamont, professor of medicine at theHarvard Medical School , says chronic diarrhea occurs when a person has three or more loose stools a day for at least 4 weeks.1 The reasons for chronic diarrhea can be:
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Food intolerance
- Intestinal infections
Let's take a look at what you can do to treat diarrhea if it occurs suddenly. There are many natural home remedies available to help relieve symptoms of diarrhea and get rid of it faster.
How to get rid of diarrhea - foods to eat
Most cases of acute diarrhea resolve within a few days. However, there are some foods and natural supplements that you can take to help cure diarrhea naturally.
Yogurt is a great food for getting rid of diarrhea. Make sure your yogurt is natural with no artificial sweeteners and flavors and like live active cultures (probiotics)Lactobacillus acidophilus andContains Bifidobacterium . These bacteria help restore balance in your intestines.
You can tell if the yogurt contains these bacteria as it is usually labeled on the packaging or is called "live yogurt" or "yogurt with live and active cultures".
One inCanadian Journal of Gastroenterology published study showed that fermented milk products thatLactobacillus acidophilus andContain Lactobacillus casei , antibiotic-related drugs are effective in preventing diarrhea and may also help if the diarrhea is caused by bacterial infections.2
Eating yogurt is especially important if your diarrhea is due to antibiotic use. In fact, when you take antibiotics there are three things you should be doing to restore healthy gut flora.
Other studies of the effects of probiotics have shown them to be effective in treating and preventing diarrhea associated with viral infections such as Rota virus.3
Ginger has been used for centuries to provide relief from gastrointestinal problems and is also an excellent natural remedy for diarrhea. Ginger is a wonderful natural ingredient that helps reduce stomach cramps. It also contains flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The Journal ofDigestive Diseases and Sciences studied the use of ginger for gastrointestinal disorders and found that it can help reduce stomach cramps in diarrhea.4
To use ginger as a home remedy for diarrhea, you can make a cup of delicious ginger tea. All you have to do is cut a small piece of ginger into slices and add it to a cup of water. Boil the water in a pan for a few minutes and pour the ginger tea into a cup.
Alternatively, you can rub a small piece of ginger, mix it with some raw natural honey (the best variety is manuka honey), and eat it.

Bananas and foods with soluble fiber
Bananas have many health benefits and are another natural ingredient that can help you get rid of diarrhea faster. This is because bananas contain pectin, a soluble fiber that is good for digestion.
Many people associate fiber with loosening up stools and helping them move through the digestive system. Dr. However, David Goldstein, a gastroenterologist, says that soluble fiber can absorb excess fluids and help tighten a loose stool.5
So foods that contain soluble fiber can help stop diarrhea. Other foods that contain soluble fiber that can be good for diarrhea include:
- Citrus fruits
has shown that it has an anti-diarrheal effect on childhood diarrhea, which is one of the most common diseases in infants and young children.
In one study, a carrot soup was made by washing, scraping, and finely chopping 500 grams of carrots. The carrots were pressure cooked with 150 ml of water for about 15 minutes. All of the pulp was then passed through a fine sieve and diluted to a liter with hot water, and a little salt was added. Fresh soup was made every day. Eat this soup fresh every day for a few days if you have diarrhea.
It is important to remember to only eat small portions and to listen to your body.
Chamomile tea has many benefits and uses, and it is also an excellent home remedy for stopping stomach pain diarrhea. This is because chamomile tea has properties that can help reduce oxidants in the intestines and reduce stomach cramps.
Clinical studies have shown that a chamomile extract can help reduce symptoms of diarrhea6 to alleviate, and studies on the properties of chamomile show that it has good all-round benefits for the relief of gastrointestinal disorders.7
Other foods that can help you get rid of diarrhea
You can also eat small amounts of other foods to help relieve your symptoms of diarrhea. TheUS National Library of Medicine recommends eating small meals instead of three large meals throughout the day. Salty foods can help restore the essential salts the body needs and reduce dehydration.8
Some also recommend eating products made from refined white flour (although whole grains are recommended in your normal diet). This is because the insoluble fiber (from whole grains) that can make the stool looser has been removed. Here's how white pasta, white rice, and cereals can help. You can also eat vegetables, but you should remove the peel beforehand.
The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast only) was previously recommended by all pediatricians for children with diarrhea. While these foods are good to eat in and of themselves when you have diarrhea, over long periods of time they do not provide all of the nutritional value needed to restore the digestive system.
Therefore recommends theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics Children with diarrhea have an age-appropriate, balanced diet with a mixture of fruit, vegetables, meat, yogurt and complex carbohydrates.9
One of the most serious complications of diarrhea, especially in babies, children, and the elderly, is dehydration, which can be detrimental to the body.
When we have diarrhea, we not only lose a lot of water, but also important minerals and salts from the body. It is therefore important to drink plenty of fluids. After every diarrhea, it is good to drink a glass of water.
Dr. Joshua Evans, a doctor and an expert on dehydration, recommends drinking small amounts of water as often as possible when you experience nausea and diarrhea. He also recommends taking rehydration solutions to replace the essential salts the body needs. If you don't have rehydration solutions on hand, sports drinks can help.10
Supplements to Get Rid of Diarrhea
There are many supplements on the market that can help you maintain a healthy digestive system and get rid of diarrhea. Let's look at some of them.
I mentioned earlier how useful probiotics can be for curing diarrhea. You can also buy and use probiotics as a supplement to help restore the natural flora in the gut.
Most studies agree that probiotic supplements are effective in treating diarrhea caused by the use of antibiotics11 , Viral infections (Rota virus)12 and bacterial infections (C. diff ) is caused.13
If you're taking antibiotics, it's a good idea to take probiotic supplements to make sure that the antibiotics aren't affecting your digestive system. You can also read my article on The 9 Reasons To Take Probiotics And Why They Are So Good For You.
Studies have shown that taking peppermint oil capsules can help relieve irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, one of which is diarrhea.14 It is important to only take peppermint oil in capsule form. The capsules allow the peppermint oil to bypass the stomach and be released in the small intestine.
Peppermint oil capsules can be purchased as a dietary supplement in many health food stores or online stores.
Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast that can be used as a home remedy for various forms of diarrhea. Although classified as yeast, it works in the gut just like probiotics to restore balance to your digestive system. Research on this yeast has shown that it can be helpful in the treatment of antibiotic diarrhea and acute diarrhea in adults.15
Saccharomyces boulardii can be bought as a dietary supplement in many online stores like this one.
What to Avoid If You Have Diarrhea
When you have diarrhea, you should also avoid certain foods.
Very often, dairy products (other than live yogurt), fatty foods, and foods high in fiber can make your symptoms worse.
Foods like beans, broccoli, plums, and peppers can also increase gas and irritate the digestive system.
You should also avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and sodas.
There is also a term called "Traveler's diarrhea ” . Traveling to foreign countries where food is different and hygiene standards are lower can often lead to an upset stomach. Hence, it is always a good idea to avoid drinking tap water and avoiding ice in your beverages.
Make sure all foods are properly cooked and watch out for raw seafood. When eating raw fruits and vegetables, it is best to peel them before you eat.
Having probiotics with you can also help get rid of travelers' diarrhea.
When to see a doctor if you have diarrhea
If diarrhea persists for more than 3 days in children and the elderly, and 5 days in adults, you should consult a doctor. If the diarrhea is accompanied by fever, weakness, and severe abdominal pain, or if you have blood in your stool, you should see a doctor immediately. Also, remember that if you have chronic diarrhea, you should see a doctor.
