How To Use Premiere Earthquake O-Ring
Suddenly the ground jerks under your feet - presence of mind and preparation improve the chances of surviving an earthquake unscathed.
Even though large regions of Germany are earthquake-prone areas, earthquakes are not common and familiar. The Rheingraben is a tectonic fracture structure that is quite active, but moves very slowly and discharges its tensions in numerous tremors that are so weak that they go unnoticed. Traveling or moving to a country whose tremors are stronger and more dangerous is unfamiliar - but if the worst comes to the worst, those affected can improve their chances by following a few rules of conduct.
Behavior in the event of an earthquake inside a building
An earthquake has different hazard potentials, depending on whether you are in a building or on foot or in a car on the street. Basically, the following always applies: keep calm. Damage to a building can result in a collapse or fire. Accordingly, it is important to close gas taps and extinguish open fires and take shelter under sturdy furniture. Alternatively, it makes sense to wait for the end of the vibration under a sturdy door frame or a load-bearing wall and keep your distance from windows. Trying to leave the building is dangerous as falling objects or glass splinters can cause injury. While waiting, you can protect your face and head with your arms crossed. Staircases and elevators should also be avoided. There is only one case where it makes sense to leave the house during the quake: if you are in the immediate vicinity of an exit at the beginning of the tremors.
What to do in the event of an earthquake outdoors
On the road, it is advisable to head for open spaces or house entrances and, if possible, keep a distance from masts and cracked lines. The same applies to tunnels and bridges as well as underpasses and exposed power lines. You can shield your head from falling objects with a bag or something similar. When you are out and about in your car, you can use the radio to find out about important measures. Emergency vehicles need a clear path: for this reason you have to keep an eye on the front and back of the road and stop to the right if necessary.
The quake has ended
If the vibrations subside, it is important to determine the integrity of those around you and, if necessary, to take first-aid measures. Look out for damage to the house - this can occur on electrical, gas or water pipes or in the form of cracks that impair the stability of the building. In addition, there may be broken glass, chemicals, or damaged items that could injure you. If you remove these, it is advisable to wear protective gloves and sturdy shoes. The radio provides the population with information about the incident very quickly - so switch on the radio. Since damage to the water supply equipment often only becomes apparent later, it is advisable to fill water into buckets, canisters, bathtubs and other suitable containers. The following applies to all of this: an earthquake is almost always followed by an aftershock. Knowing this, one can move with reasonable caution.
Well equipped for emergencies
In the event that the supply is restricted, it is advantageous to put together emergency equipment. This basically consists of long-life foods such as canned food and dry biscuits as well as three liters of drinking water per person. There is also a pocket knife, a can opener, the first aid kit, which is supplemented with the medicines that are common in the family, a world receiver and a flashlight, both of which are equipped with spare batteries. Also useful are lighter or matches and candles, a whistle and, in colder climates, a small portable oven that can be operated with charcoal or grill gas. Since the wait can take longer, blankets, a change of clothes, toiletries and a watch are recommended. The necessary identification documents, certificates, spare glasses, the most important keys and some cash should also be available, as well as the most important telephone numbers. If you are unfamiliar with the location, road maps and compants are helpful in an emergency. It also makes sense to have reserve canisters with oil and fuel.
The earthquake prevention in the case of a limited Stay
It is life-saving to perceive the escape routes and emergency exits and safe places within a house under which one can get to safety. Minimal emergency equipment, including sturdy shoes, a flashlight and head protection, may be available on the escape route. Mobility must always be ensured, so the car is best placed in a place where it is not hit by parts of the building.
The earthquake prevention in case of relocation to the area concerned
The residential building should be selected with care: the static load-bearing capacity of the building, the subsurface and a location that is as horizontal as possible are vital factors. Buildings on slopes are in principle more at risk. If doors and windows are barred, make sure that they can be opened from the inside at all times. The furniture in the house can be fixed with angle irons or other securing devices. The upper shelves are to be stocked with light items, the lower ones with heavy and fragile items. Tools such as crowbars, pliers, ax and hammer as well as sturdy protective gloves and the fire extinguisher are to be deposited within reach. Escape routes, precautionary and security measures should be known to all roommates. It is also important that everyone knows how and where electricity, water and gas are blocked and is able to provide first aid.
Earthquakes are often associated with numerous casualties - the risks and consequences are unavoidable, but it is possible to minimize them.
