Dr. Jean Gray alias Phoenix is an X-Men member and, like Professor X, a telepath. In addition, she also has telekinetic powers. Another, very powerful entity, called Phoenix, lives in it. Phoenix was trapped in Jean's mind by Professor X because she was too dangerous. In X-Men 2 she sacrifices herself so that Logan, Cyclops and the rest of the X-Men can survive. In X-Men: The Last Stand, she reappears as Phoenix.

X-Men 2 [edit | Edit source]

Professor X sends Jean and Storm to find the assassin on the President of the United States. It is Kurt Wagner, also known as Nightcrawler, who was forced into the assassination attempt by a drug.

Later, Jean, Storm and Nightcrawler pick up Wolverine and the rest of the mutants who escaped Stryker's attack on the school. However, your jet is attacked by fighter planes. Storm can shake off the pursuers with a storm she has created, but they manage to fire two more missiles. Jean can detonate one of the two missiles, but the other hits the jet. You crash. However, shortly before the impact, they are caught by Magneto.

Together with Magneto and Mystique they set off for Alkali Lake, where Stryker has its underground base. There, Jean is forced to fight Cyclops, who is under the control of Stryker's drug. But she can defeat him and bring him back to his senses.

A short time later the base begins to collapse. The dam breaks and threatens to flood the valley and kill everyone there. The X-Men jet does not take off. Jean leaves the jet to hold back the water. She prevents Nightcrawler from getting her. When the jet can finally take off, she lets go and she is caught in the masses of water. She is dead.

Later a reddish bird can be seen on the water surface of the lake.

Jean appears to Logan again and again in visions, since Logan cannot find peace in himself. Only when he defeats Yashida and loses consciousness can he let go of Jean.

Alternate timeline Edit source]

Early life Edit source]

In 1973, Jean watched a television program on Mystique that spared President Nixon's life after the attack on the White House. The event had a profound impact on Jean, remembered as the moment when Mystique became a hero to her.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Prologue [edit | Edit source]

In 1975, eight-year-old Jean was in the car with her parents John and Elaine Gray. She asked her mother to change channels, to which Elaine replied that Jean could hear any song she wanted when she was old enough to drive. At that moment Jean's telekinetic powers flared up, turned the radio dial and changed channels. When her mother asked if she was doing that, Jean denied it. As her telepathy began to manifest, Jean's mind was overwhelmed with voices, which led her to say "Quiet!" to scream. This caused Elaine to inadvertently fall asleep at the wheel of the car and steer it towards an oncoming vehicle that resulted in a car accident. Jean's telekinesis saved her from injury from the fall, but her mother was not fortunate enough to survive.

Her father survived the crash, although he was seriously injured. He blamed Jean for his wife's death and handed her over to Charles Xavier's care. Shortly afterwards, Charles Xavier offered Jean the opportunity to live with him at Xavier's school for gifted youngsters. To help Jean cope with the trauma, Xavier blocked her father's memory and told her that both parents had died in the crash.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix [edit | Edit source]

In 1992 the X-Men (Beast, Mystique, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Storm, Quicksilver, Professor X) rule on an emergency call. During a rescue mission for a spaceship that has crashed in space, you will encounter energy similar to a solar flare. When the last crew member is rescued, Jean is separated from the rest of the X-Men and absorbs the entire wave of energy.

Back at school, Jean is examined by Hank. Upon examination, it turns out that their mutation has intensified. Apart from that, since she is completely healthy both physically and mentally, Jean goes with Scott to a celebration to mark the success of the mission. At the same party, Jean suffers a kind of seizure and as a result produces a strong shock wave. She passed out after her attack.

Charles, who was on a thank you from the President at the time of her seizure, immediately goes back to the school. When he tries to penetrate Jean's mind with the help of Cerebro, Jean Charles, who is now much stronger, overwhelms. It turns out that Jean destroyed her mental blocks in the accident and now not only has access to previously banned memories, but also unimagined powers.

On the trail of your past, Jean visits her father only to find out that he turned her away and gave her free will into the care of Charles. While trying to take Jean back to school, she suffers another attack in which she accidentally kills Raven.

In shock, Jean flees to the exiled Erik Lehnsherr. Once there, she asks him how he got along with murdering people. Shortly before the conversation escalates and Jean has another seizure, the American military arrives. While Erik argues with the sergeant about the fairness of his visit, Jean takes control of two helicopters and kills almost all of the soldiers. With great effort, Erik can save one of the two helicopters from destruction and push it off the premises with all the soldiers on board.

Rejected by Erik and betrayed by Charles, Jean turns to a shape-shifting alien named Vuk. This explains to her that the solar flare-like energy was the Phoenix Force. And with the Phoenix Force, she is one of the strongest living beings in the entire universe.

Shortly thereafter, Jean is attacked by Magneto, angry about Raven's death, and some of his accomplices. With the help of her powers and the Phoenix Force, however, she can overwhelm him without any problems. When Charles tries to get through to Jean, he is almost killed by Jean. Showing old memories can reassure Jean and save Charles from death. The reassured Jean asks Vuk to take her strength again. While Vuk obeys Jean's request, Charles notices that Vuk is killing Jean and is only interested in the Phoenix Force. After Jean can't tear himself away from Vuk, Scott finally manages to separate the two.

Through the whole mess, Magneto and his accomplices as well as Charles, Jean and the rest of the X-Men are caught by the US government and sent on a train to a secret security facility.

On the way to the security facility, the train is attacked by Vuk and her D’Bari troops. Inferior to the aliens, one of the last surviving guards frees the mutants. A big fight breaks out in the middle of which is a still unconscious Jean.

After Charles manages to contact Jean, Jean wakes up and derails the entire train, throwing Vuk out and killing some of the D’Baris.

In the final fight, she faces Vuk, who tries again to deprive Jean of her powers. This time Jean allows this, however, and overwhelms Vuk with the extent of your powers, which again take the form of solar flare-like energy. Since this energy is already starting to attack the people around, Jean flies with Vuk into space, where she sacrifices herself and takes the form of a phoenix consisting of pure energy.

When Charles and Erik play a game of chess because of the old tradition, you see a phoenix flying in the sky, which shows that Jean is still alive.

Period between 1992 and 2023 Edit source]

Sometime after 2023, Jean returned to Earth and decided to return to the X-Mansion, where she became a teacher and again became Scott's girlfriend and Wolverine's love interest, mimicking the original timeline

X-Men: future is past [edit | Edit source]

Since Wolverine traveled back in time to January 1973 and prevented Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask and changing significant events after that point, there was never a war against Alcatraz, so Jean is still alive.

In 2023 Logan wakes up in the X-Mansion, goes down the stairs and sees Jean. He is shocked to see her alive. Unaware of all of the past events he has witnessed, Jean is confused by his strange behavior, but assures Jean that everything is fine. She smiles at him and tells him that she will see him later and walks away.

Super powers [edit | Edit source]

As a Class 5 Mutant and a Phoenix, Jean is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, mutants on the planet.

Trivia [edit | Edit source]

  • Jean Gray made her first appearance in the comic X-Men # 1 from 1963. At that time she was still called Marvel Girl.
  • In the comics, Phoenix was not a second personality to Jean. Phoenix was an overpowering being that needed a body. Other characters were also vessels for the Phoenix power, including Rachel Summers, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus, Ilyanna and, most recently, Cyclops. The latter five became the Phoenix Five towards the start of the Avengers vs X-Men comic book. Rachel Summers became Phoenix after Cyclops was defeated as Dark Phoenix and Phoenix needed a new host.
  • Phoenix was in the comic Avengers vs X-Men defeated by Rachel Summers and Wanda Maximoff with the phrase "No more Phoenix".
