Kelly Severide is the lieutenant in charge of Rescue Squad 3. Severide is known as the "Ladies Man" because almost every woman he seems to meet is suddenly drawn to him and often returns to them.

Kelly is dedicated to his position on the Rescue Squad and he is proud to be a part of it. He's glad he doesn't need his father's help to get where he is today.

Benny Severide (Kelly's father) was a member of Rescue Squad 4, with Wallace Boden and Henry Mills.

Severide has a lot of ex-girlfriends and shots, but the only relationships that seem to last are the ones that are non-sexual. Like best friend Leslie Shay and half-sister Katie Nolan, friendships instead of relationships.

Season 1 Edit source]

Severide and Casey are still dealing with the death of one of their team members, Andy. There is tension between Truck 81 and Squad 3 regarding the situation - Severide pretends to Casey that Andy went into the fire, while Casey blames Severide for not warning her about the vents that caused the explosion.

Meanwhile, Severide is suffering from an injury in his arm. He makes an appointment where the doctor tells him he needs an operation and he won't be able to work for a year. He ignores the instructions, the doctor warns him of the pain and injuries will get worse, but he refuses an operation. Shay, his best friend and roommate, helps him when he calls for stronger pain relievers by taking them out of the ambulance. Eventually the pain worsens and he asks for more, she tells him to have an operation and stop his childlessness. Instead, he turns to an old friend who provides him with much stronger and illegal drugs. He continues to take them until all firefighters are ordered to have a drug test after a case they are working on. He tries to delay the test but can't, Shay finds out and helps him. She is very frustrated with him and leaves her apartment. After she has an accident, he asks her to come back, but she refuses as he is still on the medication. He eventually turns to Dawson and books an appointment with the doctor, and Shay pulls out. Although the injury is exaggerated at first, he is released quickly and is back in the squad in no time.

Severide reconnects with his father, Benny Severide, who visits Firehouse 51 while serving there with Henry Mills and Chief Boden. Tension arises between him and Chief over the death of Henry Mills. Boden tells Severide to tell his father not to come back, but he definitely does. An argument breaks out between Benny and Peter Mills when Benny tells Peter that the death of his father and the other firefighter is his own fault. He tells Severide not to trust Mills. This encourages Severide to trust Mills even more and even visit Mills at home after Benny and his fight and move him to Squad 3. He tells him what courses to go to - Chief Boden supports his decision to make Mills' recent move to the Squad, that doesn't go well with Casey, who doesn't feel ready.

Season 2 Edit source]

Severide is attacked twice by an arsonist before discovering that the arsonist is targeting firefighters. He makes the connection that the arsonist is also a firefighter, most likely Kevin Hadley. When he goes to Hadley, he implies that he is the arsonist but they have no evidence, they eventually catch him and he is arrested.

Severide also meets his sister, Katie Nolan, for the first time. He tries to connect with her, but she initially refuses not to get stuck again like Benny did to her. But she changes her mind quickly and comes to visit 51, bring them dishes on occasion, be a cook. Severide is also the only one graduating to be a professional chef as her mother doesn't have time. During her visits to Fire Station 51, she meets Otis and starts dating him, with Severide always taking care of her. However, she was kidnapped by two men with a vendetta against Severide. They attack her badly and she tells Severide that although she loves him, she accepts a job offer in another state and moves away.

Shay also has a hard time after one of her patients commits suicide. In an argument, Dawson accuses her of leaving 51 and Severide watches her spiral into a time of darkness and bad decisions. She starts dating a girl who later robs her entire apartment, including Otis, who moved in with them. This annoys Severide when he warned her about the girl. This, along with the stress from the fall, drives her into depression and she contemplates suicide. Dawson finds her in front of Severide's command, who tells her to find Shay. They both apologize and Shay comes back to 51 and is happy again. However, the girl comes back to 51 and apologizes to Shay and Severide. She doesn't have much of her belongings anymore and Severide gets mad at Shay again for not calling the police. The girl lures Shay with a story about trying to help her troubled father who needs the money. This is until Severide snaps when she goes back to her apartment and stabs her. Shay gets past it quickly.

Their luck is short-lived when Shay and Dawson rush over to a building fire to help a victim. The building suddenly explodes and Shay suffers from a head injury. Severide is desperately trying to revive her.

Season 3 Edit source]

It is revealed that Shay died on the scene and attempts to revive her have failed. Severide goes astray for over a month until Chief Casey says it's time to look for him and get him back. Casey visits him, but Severide tells him he's going to open a business on the coast and not be a firefighter or a fire station. Casey is fine, but shows him a book that the chief keeps, she lives saved. This encourages Severide to return. When he first sees Sylvie Brett, he thinks she is Shay wrong until he sees her face. However, the similarity between the two causes him to approach her and use her as an excuse to get past Shay.

Severide is not himself and goes drinking every night, everyone worries about him. This is until he goes to Vegas for the weekend and meets Brittany Baker, a Florida graphic designer. Severide comes back from Vegas smiling and happy and informs the house that he got married in Vegas. They think he's kidding at first, but soon he's really getting married, Severide and Brittany were both recovering from tragic losses (Brittany drove the car it crashed and her sister died in the accident), and their boisterous marriage and connection proves a soft place where they can relax. However, Severide realizes that Brittany is still hiding from her pain. He hid from his pain by drinking and came out when he met Brittany. But she hides from her pain by being with him and avoiding her parents. They have a tearful and tender goodbye scene when Brittany returns to Florida to deal with her grief and family.

During a call, Severide and Dawson find information about Shay's death in the old building. They start to investigate further and find out that it was indeed arson. The arsonist is caught and killed after a long time. He and the rest of 51 have a memorial service for her at Molly's.

Severide's close and old friend Scott Rice is transferred to Squad 3. This increases tension between him and Mills, who also wants his old place back while he waits for his medical clearance, but Rice gets there first. Mills is transferred back to Squad 3 but only stays one shift before deciding to move to North Caroline. Rice is in Squad 3 until Otis starts calling him "Ducker" and avoiding harsh shouts. He initially claims that there was a malfunction with his oxygen mask, which Otis and Cruz refute. This creates a great deal of tension between Truck 81 and Squad 3, extending as far as Severide, who meets Otis at Molly's while defending Rice. However, the allegations cause Severide to check the mask, and he finds that Otis is telling the truth. Scott is fired from Fire Station 51.

Season 4 Edit source]

Severide finds himself in a difficult position after being demoted from his rank as a lieutenant on charges of being a poor leader due to the number of firers fired or fired. Their reasons are very real, but due to the fact that they worked under Severide, he gets the guilt. Chief Boden does everything possible to get his position back and tells him to go to the manager's meeting where his leadership skills can be improved.

Severide is having a tough time during his demotion and is constantly being undermined by Patterson, who has replaced him. Patterson, who appoints him, does not suit him well because he finds it difficult to accept that he is no longer a lieutenant. He's even being suspended for a shift for threatening to meet Patterson while trying to talk to him after the shift. He and especially Gabby think Dallas is trying to replace / get them all. Patterson doesn't understand this accusation when asked multiple times how he has a hard time understanding what he's doing wrong as he's just trying to do his job, but the fact that he's a bit rude makes him all suspicious . Benny gives Severide a file on him to eventually blackmail Patterson, Severide decides to give him the file. Patterson still doesn't understand why he would give it to him, but he helps calm Riddles down after Boden accuses him of allegations, which Severide looks surprised.

In S04E09 Severide is promoted again to lieutenant after Patterson was promoted to battalion chief.

Severide temporarily blames Cruz for the fact that Herrmann was stabbed by Freddy for taking him to the fire station and urging him to find Freddy when he runs away. This is until Chief Boden tells him to react immediately when he looks for Cruz when he tries to find Freddy in her hiding place and tells him not to risk his life if he doesn't want to in the hospital.

Kelly also develops a brief attachment to Bianca Holloway at CPD while trying to tell her one missing body they find is a teenage girl who disappeared from his neighborhood a few years ago. She is initially irritated by his efforts to identify the girl and tells him to withdraw. However, Severide is right, and later she asks him a favor - to look after her son JJ - as she prepares for a trial she has led over a dangerous gang she has discovered for several years. He agrees, but doesn't know about it until Antonio tells him about it. She tells Kelly that she is concerned about her son's safety and that Kelly should take care of him. He tells her that she can drop him off at any time.

On the day of the hearing, she dumps JJ with Kelly for a few hours. However, CPD will soon be at the fire station informing Severide that Detective Holloway was shot dead in court. Annoyed to hear this, he insists that JJ stay with him until his aunt, who asked not to tell JJ, has flown in from California. The officers agree and tell him to stay. The fire station helps JJ with a school project and tries to divert his attention from his mother, whom he keeps trying to call. They let him film for his documentary "The Day in the Life of a Fireman" and he tells them that all he has to do now is film his mother. A few hours later, Detective Crowley is back from CPD to tell him that Holloway died during the operation. He still insists that JJ stay with him until Mary (Bianca's sister) is here and doesn't let the other officer take her away. Mary arrives later that night, visibly upset and crying, asks Kelly to help her break the news on JJ. They take him to the meeting room next door and tell him with the whole fire station looking out the window in the common room. He collapses and Mary takes him with her. Shortly before he leaves, Severide gives Pouch, her dog, who is also close to JJ, to JJ when he is crying in the car. He tells him he can visit or call anytime.

Season 5 Edit source]

Most importantly, all of the fire stations disagree and are against Jimmy's angry view of being transferred to the ambulance. After Severide and Casey filed a report against Chief Boden and were brought back to Squad as a result, they are particularly irritated by his actions. This causes them to practically ignore him during their next call and he makes the hasty decision to leave despite orders and get severe burns. Chief Boden ~ sees him one last time at the hospital before he leaves.

Severide next has a disagreement about whether or not a man lit a fire in her apartment to kill his wife. Severide says he didn't start the fire because the man threw him into the burning building to save his wife. Casey disagrees as he is the one who held the wife's hand seconds before her death and also found evidence of arson. Severide tries to prove the husband's innocence but is proven wrong in the end after the husband confessed to starting the fire but didn't know his wife was inside at the time.

Severide later struggles with his relationships and starts thinking about his life. He is then injured in an accident and only gets it checked out if the boss forces him to. He meets Dr. Clarke from Chicago Med - a former friend of his who asked him to get a quick blood sample and sign up for the bone marrow registry. He wipes it off for later and leaves. Clarke comes to see him the next day and says the reason for his question is a cancer patient of his dying who needs it and he thinks Severide could be a match because of something he told him beforehand. Severide again, wipes it off and thinks it's funny. However, he goes to Clarke after Gabby and Casey get married. Clarke shows him the woman and Severide immediately agrees. Clarke tells him that he will feel the pain for months, to which he replies "good".
