Surface water and groundwater are both responsible for the water we use; groundwater is also obtained by wells and other water pumps, while surface water is easily accessible. However, both bodies of water contain contaminants and should be thoroughly filtered and boiled to sanitize and make them consumable. Surface waters such as oceans have too high a salinity to be consumed by humans, animals or plants.
