I wanted to tie a bouquet Op.68

Part of a series or song cycle:

Six songs (Op. 68)

I wanted to tie a bouquet

Clemens Brentano

I want to tie a bouquet
No flower was to be found
Otherwise I would have brought it to you.
There flowed from the cheeks
I wanted to break that for you
Probably in the dark clover,
Then it started to speak:
"Be kind in heart,
Consider your own sorrow
And leave me in pain
Don't die before time! "
And if it hadn't spoken like that,
I would have broken it for you
But now it mustn't be.
My darling stayed away
In love there is sadness,
And cannot be otherwise.

I meant to make you a posy

I meant to make you a posy,
But dark night then came,
There were no flowers to be found,
Or I’d have brought you some.
Tears then flowed down my cheeks
That had jumped up in the garden.
I meant to pick it for you
There in the dark clover,
When it started to speak:
Consider you own suffering,
In torment before my time! ’
And had it not spoken these words,
I’d have picked it for you,
My sweetheart stayed away,
Sadness dwells in loving,
