How to spell brian in different ways

road

Street is written with a sharp "s", ie with "ß"!

chatquestion of Anna more than 3 years ago

The "ß" is based on the fact that it follows a long spoken vowel. Important: only after a short vowel "ss" write!
The word street is derived from the late Lat. term strata derived what paved means.

on the spelling of "street"

Frequently written words like street should be spelled correctly, otherwise it can become an embarrassing matter e.g. in important cover letters etc.

The word won't, as is often assumed, street
written. This can be justified by the fact that double s only on
short vowels follow e.g. with "Ross", "Nuss" or "Kuss"!

But why do you still see street with "ss" and not with "ß"?

ss, ß

I think it comes from the past when "ss" were used instead of "ß" because the typewriter didn't have this character set.

Collateral damage from the spelling reform

Forumanswer of Tobias more than 3 years ago

In the course of the spelling reform, many thought that the Eszett would be completely abolished, as the Swiss have de facto done (all possible accented letters are directly on the keyboard that can be generated with the German layout - using the dead key; but they had no more room for the ß).

But that is a mistake. "Street" is and remains wrong, as is "football" and "barefoot", by the way.
