Unusual noises in a refrigerator

If noises do not always occur during operation, but only over the course of time, it may be that there is an error. Here it is definitely worthwhile to determine the cause, as the noise often heralds more serious defects. The most common causes of errors are as follows.

Defect in the fan or fan motor

The type of fan your refrigerator has depends on the model. For example, the evaporator or the condenser can be equipped with a fan. These ensure air circulation in the interior. Dirt and foreign bodies can get caught between the blades of the rotors so that the fan no longer runs smoothly. Often a thorough cleaning is enough to ensure that the leaves turn freely again.

If, on the other hand, the fan rubs against ice crystals that have formed inside, the problem is more with the defrost heater, the temperature sensor or the defrost control. In all three cases, only one exchange is usually effective. A multimeter is helpful for testing, but the exchange can only be done by experienced people.

Water inlet valve on devices with fresh water supply

If your device has a fresh water tank or an ice machine, a clogged water inlet valve can also be the cause of noises. This is the case when z. B. calcareous water clogs the nozzles over time and clogs some. So if the noises occur every time the water dispenser is filled, it is worth replacing the valve.

Possible defect on the compressor

The compressor pumps the refrigerant back into the cooling circuit. The gaseous substance is sucked in in a recurring cycle and pressed into the condenser. A defect - for example on the valves - is noticeable here from the persistent noise. Here, there is also an urgent need for action by a specialist, as otherwise further, mostly serious errors can creep in.

Bubbling can also occur if engine oil gets into the cooling circuit. This is the case, for example, if the refrigerator is connected to the power too quickly after transport.

Other possible causes of refrigerator noise

  • Loud noises often develop when the refrigerator is simply not upright. As a result, even food can make noises inside or shelves rattle. Checking with a spirit level helps here.
  • If the door does not close properly due to a defective rubber seal, the device continues to cool because heat penetrates. Here it helps to replace the door rubber.
  • If the freezer compartment is very icy, the compressor will also start more frequently.
  • If the exhaust ducts are dirty, thorough cleaning of the back of the refrigerator will help.
  • The refrigerator should not be closer than 10 cm to the wall to ensure adequate ventilation.
  • If the coolant has settled after a few years, it can help to get it going again using an unorthodox method: To do this, empty the refrigerator completely and turn it upside down. You then wait 24 hours before the device goes back on and the coolant has set again.
  • A whistling sound can occur if coolant escapes somewhere and escapes with pressure. You will notice this at the latest when the device loses its cooling effect over time.
