Steam: This is how you synchronize, delete and restore your saved games

THE ULTIMATE STEAM GUIDE

Steam does have a backup function, but it only backs up the game files and not save games or modifications. We'll show you how you can still synchronize, delete and restore your saved games.

  1. Back up saved games in the Steam Cloud
  2. Manual saving

When memory statuses are lost in a PC crash, many gamers bite the edge of the table in anger. Fortunately, there are options that can help prevent this problem. For example, Steam users don't have to worry anymore.

Back up saved games in the Steam Cloud

Similar to its competitor Origin, Steam offers you the option of saving the saved games in the Steam Cloud for supported games. In principle, you don't have to be active yourself. All you have to do is check if the game is supported. You can always manage the saved games in the respective game.

That's how it's done

  1. 1

To do this, open your game library in the list view in Steam.

  2. 2

Using the cloud symbol in the list, you can see which games are saving their saved games in the Steam Cloud and which are not. If your game does not support the "Steam Cloud", you have to back up the save files manually. You can find out how this works on the following page.

  3. Depending on the game, the Steam Cloud offers you between ten megabytes and one gigabyte of storage for backing up and synchronizing saved games.

Manual saving

If games do not support the Steam Cloud, the developers have not integrated the feature. Then you only have the option to save the saved games manually. To do this, however, you have to find out under which file path the save states can be found. We have listed the six most common paths below:

  • C: \ Users \ "your username" \ Documents \ My Games \ "the game name"
  • C: \ Users \ "your username" \ Documents \ "the game name"
  • C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ "the game name"
  • C: \ Users \ "your username" \ Saved Games \ "the game name"
  • C: \ Program Files (x86) \ "the game name"

This list is not exhaustive, and each file path will vary from game to game. The folder in which you can find the saved status is also different. We recommend that you look on the Internet in which folder the save status of your game is located and then save it on a USB stick. When saving to another device, it also checks whether the file path of the new storage location is identical to that of the original file path.
