Photoshop: create a mockup - this is how it works

Free and paid mockups can be found on numerous sites on the Internet. You can just as easily use Photoshop to create your own mockups. We'll show you how this works in this practical tip.

Create mockups with Photoshop - that's how it works

Mockups you have created yourself have significant advantages: On the one hand, they fit your project perfectly, and on the other, you can be sure that no one else is using the same image. Read how to create a mockup below. You can also see our illustrated instructions below.

  1. Of course, for your own mockup you have to take a picture first. Depending on your needs, the motif can be a smartphone, television or laptop.
  2. Then open the shot image in Photoshop.
  3. Next, create a rectangle using the toolbar on the left. This should roughly cover the area that you plan to replace later.
  4. Now right-click on the created rectangle in the layer menu and select "Convert to Smart Object".
  5. Now navigate to "Edit" -> "Transform" -> "Distort". With the selected tool, slide the corners of the rectangle onto the corner points of the area to be replaced (e.g. a laptop display).

Photoshop: insert image in your own mockup

When you have created the template, you can easily insert any image for the area of the rectangle:

  1. To do this, double-click the rectangle layer so that it opens in a new tab.
  2. Now you can insert any picture you want. For example a screenshot of your project.
  3. Save and return to the first file. You will now see that the rectangle has changed into your picture.

In the next practical tip, we will show you how to make the background of an image transparent in Photoshop.
