How to thinly sow seeds: learning about fertilizing thinly in the garden
One of the easier and cheaper ways to introduce new plants to the landscape is to plant the seeds of your selected varieties yourself. Seed packets generally give you the spacing, sowing depth and other details for foolproof sowing. Occasionally, however, they simply say "sow thin". What does sows thin mean? This term is used for very small seeds, each of which has the potential to become a tiny plant. It helps prevent wasted seeds and overcrowding between seedlings.
What does sows thin mean?
Planting seeds is a joyous activity as you grow new plants and the potential for each seed to become food or simply an ornamental treasure. Many sowing instructions will ask you to sow thinly. However, this is a rather opaque guide as any gardener's idea of what is thin would vary.
It's a bit like old recipes that ask for a pinch or splash of something. Even experienced bakers or gardeners would prefer more precise instructions to improve their chances of success. Some tips on how to sow seeds sparingly should create confusion and help your seeds grow optimally.
If we replace the word "economical" with "thin", the query can potentially be deleted. In cases where the seeds are small, sowing too large can lead to an overcrowded bed or apartment. This leads to excessive competition for space, water and nutrients, which slows growth. It can also promote diseases in which little air is circulating.
When all the seeds are sown, many will need to be thinned out or pulled out. This is a waste of seeds and can contribute to the destruction of the tiny roots of the seedlings left behind. Thin seed spacing reduces rejects, allows space for every small plant and saves time and effort.
How do I sow thin?
When instructions ask you to sow thinly, what math formula meets those requirements? The recommended distance is between 5 and 10 mm. This can be difficult with very small seeds. There are semen syringes that can help with very small seeds. You will only deposit one or two in each room. Another way to sow thinly is to mix seeds with very fine sand.
When sowing by hand, make sure that each seed has space between the next few seeds. Such manual, thin seed spacing can be challenging for seeds no larger than the tip of a pen. If you don't have access to a syringe or sand, do your best to separate the seed with a pencil or small stick before dusting it with soil.
Sow thinly in the garden
How about seeds right in the garden? Fertilizing in the garden can be even more difficult. This is due to wind and other variables in nature. In many cases, a random scattering of the seed can be done and then a thinning or pricking out will be required in a week or two.
Keep in mind that the neighboring seedling roots will be disturbed a little, so make sure the soil is loose and well worked. This makes it easier to remove the additional plants and prevents root damage in the animals left behind.
Often the thinned seedlings are useful. Some larger plants can handle seedling transplants, while smaller edible plants like lettuce can be used in salads. These tiny, delicious shades of green add interesting texture and flavor, and while not getting ripe, they are not yet wasted.
