It is the most popular pick-me-up in the morning and when you are tired: caffeine. The active ingredient obtained from nature, often referred to as tein in the context of tea, has a long tradition, and not just since we started drinking coffee and tea. Long ago people chewed coffee beans or tea leaves to enjoy the invigorating effect.

Caffeine is also contained in numerous soft drinks, for example in Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola light and Coca-Cola Zero sugar. As an ingredient, it contributes to the unmistakable taste. Therefore, it is worth knowing a little more about caffeine. We have put together five questions and answers for you.

1. What is caffeine?

Caffeine is a natural substance that is obtained from seeds and fruits. Around 60 plants worldwide contain caffeine, the best known are tea leaves and coffee beans. Accordingly, caffeine is a natural product.

2. What is the effect of caffeine?

Caffeine is one of the substances with a stimulating effect. So it has an impact on physical and mental performance. In moderate doses, caffeine stimulates muscle and heart activity as well as breathing and metabolism. As a result, it is easier, for example, to solve cognitively demanding tasks.

3. How quickly does caffeine work?

The intensity of action of caffeine is very individual and depends on the amount ingested and the regularity of consumption. The stimulating effect sets in after about 15 to 30 minutes and can last up to six hours before the substance is completely broken down by the body.

4. Can caffeine be dangerous?

As with everything we ingest, the amount matters. Caffeine should also be consumed in a balanced way and in a healthy amount. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) assumes that an amount of 400 milligrams is safe for a healthy adult. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not exceed a value of 200 milligrams. This is equivalent to around ten glasses of Coca-Cola or around three cups of coffee.

Women in "special circumstances" should consume less caffeine because they are more sensitive to the substance and break it down less quickly.

5. How much caffeine does Coca-Cola contain?

Compared to coffee, the caffeine content of a Coca-Cola is significantly lower. In numbers, a glass of Coca-Cola Original Taste or Coca-Cola Zero sugar only goes from 200ml to 20mg (Coca-Cola light contains 24mg per 200ml), whereby an average cup of filter coffee of 200ml already contains 90mg of caffeine. With 20 milligrams of caffeine, Coca-Cola contains significantly less caffeine than, for example, coffee or energy drinks.
