Which facade cladding is right for me?
Be who Home plans, they usually already have specific ideas about the external appearance of their property. Should the house adapt to the surroundings or should it stand out? Should the facade be easy to maintain? Should it meet special ecological requirements?
Most popular Facade cladding in Germany it is undoubtedly the classic plaster facade. In the case of two-shell masonry, the plaster can be applied directly to the outer shell. In the case of hammered masonry on which external insulation has been applied, the plaster is applied to the insulation. In this case, certain requirements apply to plaster and insulation so that you cannot destroy the plaster with a punch. After all, insulation materials are mostly soft materials.
The plastered facade is certainly so popular in Germany, among other things, because it is very cheap and extremely easy to care for. You can repaint the facade every ten years without any problems and otherwise you actually have no maintenance effort. In addition, it ensures a homogeneous appearance and adapts well to its surroundings. The classic plaster facade in Germany is a white painted rough plaster facade. However, there are different grain sizes for a plaster facade. The smoother, the easier it is to see dirt and damage.
In the case of a two-shell masonry, the outer, non-load-bearing wall usually serves primarily as a facade cladding. The load-bearing "inner outer wall" is 24 cm thick, followed by the insulation layer with thermal insulation, and then another wall panel of approx. 11 cm. This is attached to the load-bearing wall with wall anchors. Plastering the outer wall is therefore not necessary, the masonry, e.g. made of brick, is also the optical house facade. This facade variant is called exposed brickwork. Especially in the north you see this type of facade design more often, among other things made of brick.
A Brick facade looks much more restless than a plastered facade. However, it is also less boring and has a certain charm. Of course, you have to pay attention to the typical local construction methods. A Black Forest house is just as unsuitable for Berlin as a brick facade is for Munich.
There are many opportunities
In addition to the two façade variants mentioned above, there are also a large number of individual options. Wooden facades, among other things, are visually very appealing. However, they are right high maintenance effort. They have to be painted much more frequently than is the case with plastered facades. With wooden facades, a space is left between the insulation and the wooden elements for the air to circulate. A ventilated facade has a number of advantages and is particularly advisable for wooden facades.
The biggest advantage: The outermost layer of the ventilated facade does not have to be made of vapor-permeable material. Plaster and wood are usually vapor permeable. However, there are also facade elements that do not have this property.
The Removal of water vapor In the case of rear-ventilated facades, it takes place in the cavity between the facade cladding and the insulation that sits on the load-bearing wall. The air can easily circulate through this approximately three centimeter wide gap and thus transport the water vapor away. Steam is not wanted in the insulation, especially not if it settles as water. Otherwise, the water can collect in the insulation and sometimes severely reduce the effectiveness of the entire thermal insulation. In the long term, this can mean that not only the insulation, but also the facade cladding and even the masonry itself suffer considerable damage.
Next Wood paneling there are a variety of other materials that can be used to clad your home. However, these are rarely used in private homes. However, if you want to experiment a little here, there are many possibilities. There are facades made of natural stone, artificial stone, facade elements made of plastic materials or aluminum. The last examples are of course not permeable to vapor and must therefore have rear ventilation.
There are already facade elements that are made of Photovoltaic panels consist. These definitely have their visual appeal as long as they are intelligently integrated into the facade. In this way, your external facade also generates electricity. This type of facade cladding naturally makes very little sense on the north side. It is also quite expensive. The best place for a solar system is and will of course remain on the roof.
A facade made of solar collectors or photovoltaics makes sense, for example, if the builder wants to show that he produces solar power or uses solar heat. The facade is the face of the building. It catches the eye of every viewer first. You have the opportunity to convey your message when designing the facade. From an economic point of view, the use of Solar facade elements Nevertheless, it is interesting overall, because the solar technology not only supplies solar energy, but the panels also perform the classic tasks of the building envelope. A photovoltaic facade can replace expensive natural stone panels or stainless steel elements and still generate comparable prestige. Photovoltaic facades are always cheaper than natural stone panels.
Ultimately, the decision as to which facade you choose is one Matter of taste. After all, you want to plan your house visually according to your ideas and wishes. In addition to personal, visual preferences, the two other factors are the adaptation to the neighboring buildings and the maintenance effort for the facade. Is the wood look worth the extra effort for you? Or would you prefer it simple, inconspicuous and easy to care for? It's up to you.
